Benin Republic Foils Coup Attempt: Ex-Minister and Businessman Arrested in $2.5M Bribery Plot

Benin Republic authorities have revealed that they successfully thwarted a coup attempt that was planned for Friday. Elonm Metonou, the special prosecutor at Benin’s court for financial crimes and terrorism, announced in a statement on Wednesday that Oswald Homeky, a former sports minister, was arrested on Tuesday night. Homeky was caught handing over six bags filled with 1.5 billion West African CFA francs (approximately $2.5 million) to Djimon Tevoedjre, the commander of the republican guard and head of President Patrice Talon's security detail.
Authorities disclosed that the money was transferred using Homeky's Toyota Prado, which had fake license plates, and a bank account under the commander's name was opened in Côte d’Ivoire on August 6. Additionally, Olivier Boko, a businessman and longtime friend of President Talon, was implicated in the plot. Boko was arrested separately in Cotonou on Monday.
Boko, who had recently expressed his intentions to run for the presidency in 2026 when Talon's second term ends, is believed to have conspired with Homeky to bribe the military commander, ensuring no resistance to the coup. The investigation is ongoing.
