Rivers Politics: A Look at the Changing Dynamics of PDP Loyalty

The political scene in Rivers State has taken some interesting turns, particularly among members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). As Governor Siminalayi Fubara's administration unfolds, some of the same PDP supporters who once criticized him now rally behind him. But this shift is a reminder of the complex political loyalties in Nigeria.

The Politics of the Past

1. History Forgotten?
It seems that some of the younger PDP members, those actively voicing their opinions on social media, may not fully understand the party’s historical dynamics. Between 1999 and 2015, the PDP had significant influence over institutions like the military and police, using them strategically during tense political moments. For instance, back in the day, PDP forces were instrumental in preventing figures like Adams Oshiomole and Rotimi Amaechi from entering Ekiti State.

2. Selective Criticism
Interestingly, some of these younger voices once expressed disdain for Sim Fubara when he was "imposed" as the PDP candidate. It wasn’t so much about his policies, but more about the money they were hoping to gain from him. Fast forward to today, and many of these same individuals are singing a different tune.

3. Misplaced Accusations
There have been calls suggesting that the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) should align with the APC. Such claims are baseless and do nothing but distract from the real issues at hand. Political figures should focus on policy and governance rather than these unfounded accusations.

4. Democratic Space Should Be Open, But...
While it’s important to protect democratic spaces and ensure that everyone’s voice is heard, PDP members should reconsider their stance on certain matters. Given their history, there are times when silence might be the best course of action. Let the younger generation from other parties, such as the Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), take the lead in raising concerns about issues like police interference.

The Takeaway

Rivers politics is a dynamic game, with shifting loyalties and evolving narratives. The political class may change its tune as circumstances evolve, but history shows us that these changes are often more about power and resources than ideological differences. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it’s important to stay focused on governance and genuine democratic progress.
